DIY Bookmarks that You Absolutely Need In Your Life//Easier Than Eating Potato Chips

What happens when you ask a bookworm what they collect other than books?

Maybe they’ll say pieces of lint from their pockets or the wrappers of red tootsie pops or the blood of their enemies to forge their swords

If they’re the basic and typical book obsessed queen, hopefully they’ll say bookmarks!  But when you see these bookmarks down the cheap line at Barnes & Nobles, you will find that bookmarks, little rectangular pieces of paper may be 10 bucks.  TEN DOLLAHS.

I have conformed to the way of the bookmark. A few months back, I did a really problmatic post in which I preached my faithfullness to dog earring.  (btw… um… don’t read it?  It literally tells you why you shouldn’t use bookmarks and WE ARE NOT ABOUT THE NON BOOK MARK LIFE TODAY)  According to bookish queens, dog earring is the most unforgivable sins.  Or according to the comments on that post.

Sooo, obviously to redeem myself I’ll do one of the things I’m best at:  DIY!  I can do it ALL myself.  Including bookmarks.

First off we have the gosh darn prettiest paper I have ever laid my dear eyeballs on

You can literally get this beautiful scrapbooking paper pack for like 6 bucks at any craft store.  Any craft sore ever.  At least, I’m pretty sure.  Maybe there’s some random craft store in like Kentucky that doesn’t have this.  BUT IF YOU DON’T LIVE IN THE MIDDLE ON NOWHERE IN THIS IMAGINARY CRAFT STORE I MADE UP THEN YOU’RE ALL GOOD!

It costs like 30% less than the bookmarks at Barnes & Noble, and you can make like a gazillion more bookmarks so you can go get it now.  That’s a command.

Just kidding, you can use any paper.  Construction paper may look like a 1st grade craft project, but you do you.

I chose this aesthetically pleasing starry constellation paper.  The stars are black though, so I especially related to them because that is the color of my SOUL lol

Oh, and you will also need a cute little thing of embroidery thread, which will come in handy very soon.

76645263-0185-4A14-873F-CE53D0DB9AB6

First off, cut off a somewhat book mark shaped piece of your paper.  I was too lazy to take any measurements, I also seemed to have lost all of my three rulers so  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Then you can take your trusty handy-dandy hole punch and punch a hole in the top.  But try not to get it too close to the edge, because it could rip.  Also, try to center it, which is something you can see from the above photo is NOT my specialty.  😉

2C33FCF6-E7D6-42F1-ACC0-B11A1590C4E8

Then you should take your matching thing of embroidery thread, and pull out the end a little bit as kindly shown above.  ^^^

You can take that bit of end string, and loop it back to about 1.5 inches from the other end.  Then, tie a knot where shown.  The tie another knot.  Or 7 knots, like I did.  Because I’m paranoid and I don’t trust double knots.

04615DA6-88EC-42C5-9A87-23CD04D04776

Then you pick up your scissors again and cut the short looped part so you have made a  tassel!

You can trim the cute little tassel to your desire, or leave it how it is.  Give it a haircut.  Not a mohawk, though.  Mohawks must look rather strange on tassels.

Then, cut off the rest of the long stuff, leaving one string to tie to the hole in the bookmark.

2CA41DB1-363D-4C6B-9C9C-00954C5F941D

Then simply knot it a few times around the hole and voi to the la, you have the first bookmark.  Wow.  Wasn’t that hard.  😉

This is the wonderful bookmark in ya know, an actual book.  Oooh.  Aaah

For the next DIY bookmark, cut out another piece with no measurements provided by moi because I’m far too lazy to do so.

I got a ton of stickers for Christmas, and what I usually do with this type of stuff is hoard it  and never use it but I am conquering my sticker hoarding anxiety issue and used one for this craft!  F45D0D93-3AFF-4885-A364-A6325B8F9219

I applied the sticker to the book mark.  THIS IS THE HARDEST PART.  Because all of these DIY’s are so. darn.  hard.

Now, take some washi tape that you can find at Target.  I actually collect washi tape so I have wayy too much of it.

Wrap the tape around the ends, and ba-da-boom you got yourself a book mark.

If you have even more stickers like yours truly, you can stick it to the man to a piece of paper

017B78A0-10E4-48A8-B1C2-40D6326E8F66

And then you need to pay extra special attention to this part.  You need to cut out a circle.  Rocket science, I know.

So my mother got some flowers for some random holiday, and it came with this sticker.  Since it’s my aesthetic, she lovingly gave it to her most favorite daughter.

1CFA7701-4552-4E52-A11A-B69DFB4B3F94

I broke the heart with my scissors bc I’m a heartbreaker.

B1179E38-0A67-464E-BC6C-903425DE3BBB

I cut it into a rectangle.  So complex.

DBC16848-D2B2-48E9-A9E2-A01FBD14FEB8

Thennn you can add yet another sticker to it.  I chose this tumblr-y eye sticker.  Illuminati confirmed

176C9633-6CF5-429B-8E89-3A7F93DCBC8B

THIS IS MY FAVORITE because it’s cat related.  I’m obsessed with cats, more than you even know.  Literally, when I walk through the aisles at Target to get pet food, and I see the model kittens on the wall, I squeal really loudly.  Definitely way too loud to be in a public establishment.

9B03DD17-3A3D-411B-8510-C2E952BA5034

So you need a piece of paper, it doesn’t matter which color, but I chose yellow because it was all I had.  Then, cut a piece in the middle to give the kitty ears!

78882B96-E816-4B02-BB6A-D3A38C225760

Then, you can take a red marker to draw the eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers.

3866BEB7-5DE3-44D8-B852-FFB045319FE0

It’s adorable and I’m squealing right now just thinking of all the cats that I can have because I’m going to for sure be a crazy cat lady when I’m 40.

(excuse my gross nails)

  1. These bookmarks are amazing! Ok, the tv just came on and it was on Beauty and the Beast and it said “books books! Swamps of books!” Ok, I definitely have a bookmark/sticker obsession. You’re really funny. I don’t read much anymore, but when I was younger I like, never used a bookmark. I read a ton of books, so we would have random books draped around furniture and other pointy things. So, I guess I used the couch as a bookmark?
THESE BOOKMARKS ARE SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING!

This random book on the history of flight called Wings by Tom Crouch (it was 99 cents at Goodwill and the cover was really aesthetic)
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens (it’s putting me to sleep cuz he can’t focus and would rather give us a bunch of weird metaphors than a story)
and Great Expectations by Charles Dickens (opens with threats of cannibalism – how bout that, dickens, what the heck)
So yeah my tbr comes up to almost 3000 pages of material i need to read. lol let’s do this. i need six bookmarks tho so yay
